Research for Action (RFA) serves as the external evaluator for Project PRIDE (Preparing and Retaining Secondary Mathematics Teachers Who Implement Diversity and Equity Practices in High-Needs Schools), a Noyce Track 1 Scholarships and Stipends project at Penn State Harrisburg (PSH). This project aims to address the shortage of mathematics teachers in Pennsylvania, particularly in the South-Central region, as well as the lack of racial diversity within the teacher workforce. Over the course of its five-year timeline, this project aims to prepare 16 new mathematics teachers, recruiting both undergraduate students and post-baccalaureate candidates. This project is designed so that the benefits will extend beyond the 16 Noyce scholars to others enrolled in the PSH certification program who, though not supported by the Noyce scholarships, will receive comprehensive preparation for teaching in high-needs schools.
As the external evaluator, RFA provides formative and summative feedback each year, particularly as it relates to scholars’ knowledge and use of mathematical-modeling activities, scholars’ self-efficacy regarding culturally responsive teaching, and the provision of a comprehensive induction support system.
