This report is an evaluation of the performance of the Science Learning Network (SLN) during the first three years of its existence, from 1995 to 1997. SLN was a collaboration of six science museums and the Unisys corporation, formed with the goal of supporting inquiry science teaching in schools by integrating museum resources into classrooms and harnessing the power of telecomputing. The collaboration helped museums and schools create and utilize online presences at a time when the World Wide Web was in its infancy. This report examines SLN’s theory of action and explores the challenges of collaboration between formal and informal educational institutions.
